Traveler Guitar Insert Nut Repair (8)

Created on: 7 Feb 2022
An insert nut on my Traveler Guitar Pro Series had loosened and would creep out of the wood. This guitar is probably 20 or so years old. Bo Walker suggested repairing it with JB Weld. The repair turned out good and I don’t think the insert will come out again. A special thanks to Bo for his suggestion.

I used Kapton tape to get a tight seal around the hole and to protect the guitar finish. I chose Kapton tape because it’s transparent, very thin, and has a silicon adhesive that seals out liquids. Kapton tape is used in electronics manufacturing. After covering the hole, I cut the hole out with an X-acto knife. I made sure I got a thick layer of JB Weld on the hole walls as well as on the knurled area of the insert nut. The excess JB Weld lifted off cleanly along with the tape and there was virtually no residue to clean up.
  • The completed repair.
  • The finished repair. I estimate this guitar is around 20 years old. The discoloration in the finish is just general wear from handling and storage of the leg rest.
  • Excess JB Weld after the nut was inserted. Most of it lifted off along with the Kapton tape.
  • JB Weld has been applied to the insert nut and the hole wall. I was careful to keep the JB Weld of the threads.
  • The hole for the insert nut. The hole was clean after the nut was pulled out.
  • The insert nut that had loosed up. There was a small amount of glue left on the nut. The hole wall didn’t have any glue it.
  • My little repair area.
  • This is why I have the Traveler Guitar. I can play guitar anywhere.
