Our
December meeting was hosted by John Timblin. We had eighteen attendees
and saw some new faces. A buffet luncheon was served. The swap meet
shown here was a great success with lots of fine wood and machinery
changing hands. |
 |
Jim
Whelan joined us for the first time. Here is is showing his fine first
guitar. The back is high flame walnut, the top is sitka spruce and
it sports gold Gotoh tuning machines. It is amazing the quality of
work we have seen in this and other first instruments. Click
this link for more of Jim's work. |

Ed
Schaefer playing Chubby
|
John Timblin
shown here with his sixth guitar. This is his first classical instrument.
The design is called Chubby. It is has mahogany back and side, a
cedar top and a laminated lacewood neck with Irving Sloane tuning
machines. The back is from the same billet of mahogany that he used
on his first steel string.

Steve
Mayo (left) showed his 3rd guitar in process. It is a walnut dreadnought
and look like its another winner.
Steve Kinnaird (right) is showing off his jig that he uses to make
his rosettes off of the top. For more on this and other great ideas
from our members see the new
tips page.

For the technical
demonstrations Chis Jenkins (above) showed his method of side bending
using a form and heating blanket. For more on this
Don Chesser
(right) showed another variation on the parallelogram binding ledge
cutter that Harry Fleishman
invented. This ones by John Timblin. Check the August
2001 notes for Don's version.
And finally,
John Timblin (below) demonstrated side bending using a half form
on a shop built Charles Fox bending machine.
